Shadow Watcher - 2006

1st generation sitting gargoyle pony

Design & Custom by Aikarin

So, this pony took forever to carve out of a chunk of concrete...ummm...yeah, right.  ^_~  She's actually made from a G1 sitting pose pony.

Shadow Watcher is an experimental pony.  The sitting pose is just perfect for a gargoyle.  I also had a package of EfaPlast to experiment with.  Her wings were crafted out of mesh & wired firmly into slits cut into her back.  Then, they were glued securely with lots of tacky glue! ^_^

The wings were covered in EfaPlast.  I decided to sculpt spikes where her mane was.  Of course, no gargoyle would be complete without some spines coming out of her head.  As EfaPlast doesn't stick to plastic, all parts were glued on again, after they dried.

This pony is actually a lot lighter than she looks...EfaPlast doesn't weigh very much.

Like other gargoyles, Shadow Watcher is kept in place by a chain.  It's custom made out of silver-tone links and jump rings.  There is a lobster clasp at the neck and another one where it connects to the stand.  I suggest leaving the neck clasp in place...it was a pain trying to get that one fastened since there isn't a lot of room between the wings and her chin!

Her monochromatic eyes were painted with several shades of gray.  The paint I used is acrylic based, but it also has sand-like grains mixed in.  I jazzed it up by adding some more glitter in black, gold, and a touch of silver!  I painted one coat of matte varnish, but I didn't like the way it looked.  It made the pony look very "plasticky".  So, she got another coat of sandy paint!

Shadow Watcher's big claws were an afterthought.  I was playing around with some sculpting tools and came up with this design.

Perched atop her custom finished box.

Here, you can see her curly tail.

Shadow Watcher's stand is actually a wooden hexagonal box with a custom paint job.  The outside matches her textured granite paint and the inside is a deep burgundy color.  I lined the inside with matching burgundy flocking, so it is very soft!  The bottom of the box is lined with black felt, so it won't scratch your tabletop or bookshelf.

You can see a small part of the wire loop on the inside of the lid, but the lid still fits snugly.  The wire loop is glued into place.

Here are some pictures before completion.

Shadow Watcher is an original Aikarin design and she will NOT be repeated.  She is signed & dated under one hoof in silvery white.  Shadow Watcher is NOT FOR SALE.
